SEPT 26—28

Printed Matter presented the ninth annual NY Art Book Fair, from September 26 to 28, 2014, at MoMA PS1, Long Island City, Queens. A preview was held on the evening of Thursday, September 25.

The NY Art Book Fair Preview

Over 4,000 people joined us on Thursday, September 25 from 6 to 9 pm, at MoMA PS1 for our opening night preview. The evening featured a DJ set by JD Samson followed by a live set by Thurston Moore & James Nares on the steps of PS1.

At 7pm there was a signing at Printed Matter‘s booth in the lobby of PS1 of Thurston Moore’s new chapbook of lyrics The Best Day, published by Ecstatic Peace Library, and a launch and signing of Non Stop Poetry, a comprehensive publication chronicling over 145 zines by Mark Gonzales.

Free and open to the public, the NY Art Book Fair is the world’s premier event for artists’ books, catalogs, monographs, periodicals, and zines. This year, the fair features over 350 booksellers, antiquarians, artists, institutions and independent publishers from twenty-eight countries. This year’s fair was attended by more than 35,000 people.

Fundraising Editions

Printed Matter presented new limited-edition artworks by Jonathan Horowitz, Sara Cwynar and Dorothy Iannone. Purchase of these editions support the Fair, helping to ensure that the event remains free.

This year’s NY Art Book Fair included an ever-growing variety of exhibitors – from the zinesters in (XE)ROX & PAPER + SCISSORS and the Small Press Dome representing publishing at its most innovative and affordable, to rare and antiquarian dealers offering out-of-print books and ephemera from art and artist book history. NYABF-classic Friendly Fire focused on the intersections of art and activism, and with the support of the Norwegian Consulate General in New York, the NYABF and Printed Matter presented NORWAY FOCUS: KUNSTNERBØKER, a curated selection of 23 Norwegian booksellers, institutions, artists and independent publishers.

NYABF14 was also host to an array of programming and special events: in its sixth year, The Classroom was a curated engagement of informal conversations, workshops, readings, and other artist-led interventions. The Contemporary Artists’ Book Conference (CABC), in its seventh year, featured two full days on emerging practices and issues within art-book culture. The stage at the top of the stairs had continuous musical performances programmed by Printed Matter, Showpaper, and Know-Wave Radio.
